Wishing for an Organised Home Office Space

Last year I was on a mission to turn our house into a home.  We would tackle “One Space At A Time”  transforming it into a purposeful, organised and gorgeous part of our family home.

We made a good start and over the year “made over” many spaces, but now due to some room rearranging, a lack of time and general procrastination we are at a standstill.

But that HAS to change. Every day I sit at my desk, look around and cringe at the dumping ground that is our “Home Office”. This space is where furniture goes to die, a dumping ground for papers, bits and party supplies.  Far from organised or inspiring.  I dream of an organised and inspiring space where I can work without stepping over a m

So how do you create such a space;

1. Create a PURPOSE “Wish List”

  • What do you do in this room?
  • What do you want this room to do for you?
  • What could it be used for? Think outside the box, you may be able to rearrange furniture to create whole new purposes for the space.

2. Create a LOOK “Wish List”

  • How do you want this space to look?
  • Do you have a colour pallette in mind?
  • How do you want the space to make you feel?  What could you incorporate into the styling of this room to achieve this.

3. Create an ORGANISATIONAL “Wish List”

  • What type of storage does this room require?
  • Does it require large storage systems like shelves, drawers or cube units?
  • Would small storage such as buckets and baskets help?

With all this in  mind I got to work creating my own home office Wish List.

With my list in hand I headed to Target.  Partly becuase I always find what I am looking for there but mostly because they are having a Massive Home Wares Sale!

And here is what I came up with!

1. These small seagrass baskets are grey for hiding away cords, batteries, labelling machines, printer cartridges whilst also keeping them organised.

2. I love a good candle and this metal lantern is so my style.

3. Some inspirational word wall art in my favourite colours to keep me motivated during thos elong nights.

4.  A stylish clock to keep me on track and on time.

5.  A 9 cube storage unit  for folders, books and baskets.  Everything in it’s place!

6. A RUBBISH BIN!  Somehow I have never gotten aorund to having a bin in this space!

Using these simple steps, a task that was positvely overwhelming,  is now a positive step in creating my dream office space!

So what would be on your wish list?

  1. My wish list would be storage storage storage! Especially shelving big enough for big ring binder folders – I have so many full of units of work!

  2. on my wish list would be a new white shelving unit, a large whiteboard/magnetic board I could attach to the wall, a lovely looking clock and a nice vase i could fill with flowers =)

  3. Christina Robinson says:

I would love some more storage too – my ‘stuff’ seams to be overflowing! And quotes wall art would finish it off nicely 🙂

  4. My home office wish list definitely consists of a cubed storage unit just as you have chosen. My colour choice is pink and grey so something decorative like a wall pic would be wonderful. However the biggest thing on my wish list is white boards/cork boards and magnetic boards to set up a pottery Barn style daily home organising station.

  5. Mechelle M says:

My wish list is to create a organisation station (so one can organise the kids better for the school week with one at preschool half the week, the other at transition and the youngest at either MOPS, playgroup or just on a drive with me).
    Must haves are:
a cork board to pin all the notes that seem to come home
Cube unit for their bags, a few baskets for the odds and ends that can easily look cluttered.
Multiple photo frame – for all the current photos of the kids.

  6. Michelle says:

On my wishlist would be office storage and decoration! My husband is self emploed and I help keeping on top of paperwork, etc but we really lack any sort of storage, filing system, etc. This would help us be more organised and on top of things!

  7. Marcia Coventry says:

I work from home and a few things come to mind. A clock, something prettier than an old box for my paper work and an oil diffuser to make my work place smell inviting.

  8. I would love to get a school corner for the kids with pretty hooks for bags and shelves and whiteboards. And maybe a pretty picture for me as well 🙂

  9. Kimberly Featherstone says:

Would love a storage unit or drawers to keep all the craft stuff together but with easy access for the kids and off my office table…

  10. Jasmine Shea says:

I would love some cupboards/shelving below and around the TV. Some doors on the cupboards mostly, then I can hide away the toys, games and DVD’s. Then maybe an instruction manual so my kids can learn to pack it all away….lol.

  11. Narelle Rock says:

some storage for my bathroom, for all the creams and hair products that the family use.

  12. Lego storage.. Display and store of the wonderful creations

  13. Charmaine Campbell says:

The nine cube storage unit would be fabulous, in fact I could use a few of them in my place!

  14. My wish would be for organised storage for all my journals and inspiration and a desk that could both accommodate my computer ‘stuff’ and a creative space for drawing. At the moment I only just fit the computer..

  15. Allison @ Utterly Organised says:

The Target Cube Systems are great – I would LOVE another one! With my son’s birthday and Christmas only days apart, I am still finding myself here in March trying to make room so this would be ideal.

    Great giveaway!

  16. More storage and a new computer table, which can hold printer and speakers

  17. Kristin Santi says:

I’ve been coveting a Target storage cube for a while now, I just haven’t bitten the bullet and bought it yet. However, it would be hard to resist buying $40 worth of chocolate, only because Target don’t sell alchol – he he.

  18. Mary Preston says:

I desperately need a new throw rug for the lounge. I always say: one more wash & then it’s clean & smells good so it stays. I need to be ruthless one day when everyone is out, because it has been much loved, but it’s had its day – decade really!!

  19. I am currently shopping for some inspirational wall art for our new dining room, the kids do their homework at the table and I think it would be the prefect addition to our shabby chic kitchen

  20. Michelle van Schouwen says:

On my wish list is some funky book ends, inspirational wall art and a cute new pen/stationery holder. Target always has lots of nifty items and I have no problem spending my money with them!

  21. leanne oneill says:

I would love a storage area for my nearly 3 yr old dress UPS!! Somewhere for all the dresses, a box for the shoes and,a box for the crowns!!!! bc whilst Cinderella had a fairy godmother, we don’t!!!

  22. Jody Kaden says:

I love all kinds of storage & with the purchase of a bigger house on the horizon I could store all kinds of things, especially if I could have a dedicated craft room.

  23. Im wanting to do up my sons bedroom with cube storage and some nice bedding for his big boy bed.

  24. Tracey Brown says:

a new laminator, i just broke mine

  25. Jennifer Bruce says:

I would love one of those cube shelves for my office. Stylish and functional and you can never have enough storage space!

  26. I’ve been wanting to turn one of my built in wardrobes into a crafting area for quite some time. It’s main purpose will be to store crafting supplies and be a place where I can also create. I’m still working on a colour palette but I’m thinking a combination of teal & white or baby pink and mint green.

So on my wishlist would be lots and lots of storage baskets, something to hold 12×12″ scrapbooking papers, and a comfy office chair!

  27. Sandy Whittington says:

I wish I had somewhere to display my kids creations

  28. Great mood board!!

  29. On my wishlist would be this http://shop.target.com.au/p/family-rules-framed-print/P51660727 Family Rules Framed Print for the family room and to go alongside it some frames for family pictures like this 3 Window Landscape Photo Frame
http://shop.target.com.au/p/3-window-landscape-photo-frame-20-3-x-61cm-black/P45839245 as I really, really need to get some pictures of us printed out and up on the walls! We don’t even have any of our wedding pictures up and we married almost 6 years ago. This year is the year to change that!

  30. Oooh storage. Little bins, big bins, drawers organizers, clip boards and something cute. Since we’re renting and will be moving soon I’m keeping to key flexible items. After the move I’ll add more style and color.

  31. Loni Mcdavis says:

Candles are wonderful things that can evoke many moods and enhance many settings. Perhaps you’re planning a romantic dinner for two, or a family Thanksgiving or Christmas gathering. Placing candles on the table adds to your decor and tells your guests that they’re special…
