Reader’s Organised Nest – The Wardrobe

After almost 5 years of blogging about Organised Spaces, I am still constantly searching for inspiration on how to maintain an organised home.  It is easy to get caught up in the Pinterest and Instagram homes and their meticulously organised spaces. But there is still nothing better than seeing a “real” space, to motivate you to get organised and provide you with fresh ideas that have a realistic price tag and practicality in their perfection.

So without further adieu I would love to share an Organised Space of one of our readers.  Alicia’s Master Wardrobe caught my eye with its uniformity, dual purpose (dressing area as well as wardrobe) great storage options and it simple yet beautifully styled practicality.  She recently shared her space with me and how she made it happen.

 

Who uses this space?
As the main wardrobe for both myself and my husband I had always dreamed of something classy yet that still appeased my long suffering husband and his fears of when I go on an organisation bender. Cue disgruntled remarks, “Where are my undies now!” On that note I knew keeping it as simple as possible and yet still stylish was the key when organising this space.

Why did you choose this space to organise?
I’m a firm believer of ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’. Being a space that I visit frequently each day I knew that I wanted my wardrobe to be a place that made me feel good about myself every time I got dressed. So when I found myself having to wade through a sea of floor clothes to get dressed each morning I knew that it time to make some changes.

How did you tackle it?
To tackle the problem head on the first thing I did was purge, purge, purge! I sorted through all of our clothes, keeping those we actually used and either donating or binning the rest (some rather holey ‘lucky’ shorts may have been smuggled out in the wheelie bin).

What products did you use? 
The bones of the closet were created using the Bunning’s Clever Closet system. This was originally purchased as a cheap alternative with dreams of custom cabinetry for the long term however I have fallen in love with the simple elegance of the system (and also the price tag – the whole set up cost only approximately $200). I created specific zones for both mine and my husband’s clothes to make it as functional as possible. The system is completely customisable enabling me to take full use of just one wall of hanging space.

The white chest of drawers were a previously owned item but I kept with the crisp white colour pattern to make the space feel bright and clean. The white baskets were an awesome find from Woolworths – I seriously have about twenty of these babies all over my house. They come in white or black and two sizes. I used these to store all of our less commonly used clothes like jumpers and my husband’s insanely large football hat collection out of sight.

The dark stain timber coat hangers were my splurge item, however to ease the cost I slowly built up a supply over several months. They were from Howards Storage at $32.95 for a pack of 18. But any matching hanger will create the same effect and make the space feel more put together.

Any tips or tricks?
I love how by just making everything uniform a space can really feel finished and together. By just having the same repeating white basket and matching hangers it creates a feel of harmony.
How is the end product working for you now?
I absolutely love this wardrobe now! My hearts sings a happy little organised song every time I glance it! And no more cries of lost undies from the hubby to date!

Winter Health Tips for Mums and Bubs

This morning we woke to temperatures of 1 degree! This cold weather fills me with fear, as it signals not only the start of winter, but of “flu season.”  With three little kids and two parents that need to go to work, we are desperate to stay as well as possible this winter.  Over the years of coping with a million germs brought to me lovingly by a class full of children, I have learnt a few tips and tricks to survive winter.

“The Flu Shot:” A few years ago both of our workplaces introduced on site flu shots. I was pregnant with Little Miss A at the time and was a little hesitant to get it.  After consulting my GP I was pleasantly surprised to not only find was it completely safe for pregnant women but recommended! A perfect way to not only protect myself but my little ones.  Many workplaces now offer the flu shot with a visiting nurse or you can ask your GP.

Healthy Hands: As a family, we spend a lot of our time out and about at playgrounds, shopping centres and theme parks.  I always keep some hand sanitiser handy to help keep those germs away.  We keep a pump pack in the house for the kids to use after they have blown their noses and I encourage the kids to wash their hands with soap and water after they cough and sneeze.  This is to help stop spreading the germs to the baby and I always keep a small hand sanitizer in my bag.

Tissues and wipes: Speaking of runny noses…….you can never have too many tissues!  I keep a little pack in the kid’s bags, a few in the car, a few in my handbag and a whole heap of boxes in the house.  But when little noses have been blown too many times and are red raw I find a baby wipe is a little harsh whilst still doing the job.

You are what you eat! During winter in particular I keep a close eye on what we are eating.  I try to boost veggies and fruits wherever I can by adding them to smoothies, making up a big veggie mash, sneaking them into lasagna or bolognese sauce, and even into the chocolate muffins (zucchini is a great match!)

H20 to go: I am a horrible water drinker!  Especially in winter when I am sweating less, I often get to the end of the day and realise I have not had any water at all!  I keep a drink bottle with me and try to refill it, at least once, but eight glasses a day will keep you in tip top shape for winter

Sunny Days: This cold weather has me seeking some warmth in the sun and I find I spend more time outdoors as I can actually enjoy the weather (and not sweat off half my body weight!)  We love to get out a picnic rug, enjoy lunch outside in the sun and fill up on some Vitamin D, which is great for boosting immunity. (But don’t forget to still slip, slop, slap)

Exercise: When I am feeling lousy there is nothing like a walk in the fresh air to get me out of a slump.  I throw the baby in the pram and we head down to the lake to run around the playground.  Keeping active in small everyday ways is hopefully burning off some of those winter hot chocolates and keeping your body in fighting condition if any winter nasties come your way.

 

I find the easiest way to keep up with these habits is to stay organised and create a little “Winter station” on the kitchen bench with tissues, water, hand sanitizer and some fresh fruit and veggie snacks, ready for the kids when they are hungry.

By implementing these simple but effective habits our household feels prepared to face our healthiest winter yet.

Back To School: Buying Name Labels

 It’s no secret that I love to label.  I have dedicated much of my life to ensuring everything and every place in our home is labelled!  Labels ensure items find their way home.  This is never more true than all those items that leave your home to visit school, Kindy or work each day!

Pencils, scissors, socks, and books.  If it is leaving your house, LABEL IT! If you LOVE it LABEL IT!

With a new school year ahead now is the perfect time to stock up on name labels.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN LABELS 

QUALITY.  This for me comes before everything else.  Labels are one of those items where you really do get what you pay for.  There are many label companies out there these days but don’t scrimp on quality for the sake of saving a few dollars.  A good label can last for many years, buy it cheap and you may have to buy it twice, costing more money in the end.

Look for labels that;

  • Are Dishwasher Safe (For lunchboxes)
  • Are Washing Machine Safe (For Clothes)
  • Come in various sizes.
  • Are Laminated (paper labels are just not durable)

PRICE.  This is where it pays to be organized.  Finding a great price does not neccessarily mean finding the cheapest. Make a list of the type of labels you will need.  Savings can be found by purchasing a value pack that includes a variety of label sizes and type that best suits your needs. You can buy a cheap pack but if it’s full of labels in sizes you don’t need and doesn’t include a number of the ones you DO need! 

DESIGN.  I am going to be looking at these labels A LOT.  They may as well look good.  Also for younger children, having a particular picture or theme to the labels, assists non readers to identify which items belong to them. E.G My shoes are the ones wit the airplane picture.  I also like to get a variety of colours in my pack to help with colour coding!  I know it is a bit OCD but in the past I have used different colours for different days of the weeks or to even to help identify the left and right shoe (Red for Right, Lime for Left) By putting two matching colour labels

BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING. 

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Check with your school what needs to labeled.  Some classrooms, especially in the early years have communal pencils,  crayons and even scissors.  These items often don’t need to be labeled.  However, some times it also pays to label everything just the same as at least you are in with a chance of unused items being returned to you at the end of the year.  Ask the class teachers or even parents who  have been at the school before. 

CLOTHING AND SHOE LABELS.  Don’t forget to include clothing and shoe labels.  Have you ever tried to work out whose black velcro shoes belong to who in a see of 25 pairs of identical shoes? Clothing labels generally come in either the stick on or Iron on variety. In my experience although the stick on labels are obviously much easier to use, the iron on ones do last longer.

 I make up a big table.  If you think I love a good label, you haven’t seen me with a table! Just in word I create a label to track what we have purchased, what we have received, what kind of book cover we will need and what kind of label we require for each item.

By doing this I can easily workout how many of each item, we need and make the most of value packs.

mini labels, the best option for fiddly pencils and crayons

 This year we needed LOTS of Mini Labels.  EVERY pencil, text and crayon was required to be individually labelled. In past years we have required lots of regular name labels and book labels.  I also made another table for uniforms.  With two children in completely new uniforms this year I needed to stock up on clothing and shoe labels.

So who do I use?  This is actually my fifth year of using Stuck On You.  At first when Master O went to child care I choose them because they were cute.  After seeing how durable they were I continued to buy them! I have even bought Little Miss A a few before, not that she has ever really needed a label!

Bento Lunch from Meet The Dubiens

When Master O started Kindy, we became all kinds of desperate to develop a plan of attack for lunch boxes.  I suddenly felt overwhelmed by the restrictions of what he was allowed to take, what he would actually eat and providing variety. After some trial and error we developed a printable plan to ensure variety, organisation and that he was getting a great combination of proteins, calcium, grains, fruit and veggies.

So just like we plan meals in this house we also plan what is going into the lunch box each day for the week ahead.

I have shared our planning template before but here is another sneak peek.

At the bottom of this plan is also a few lines to add your shopping list too.  I print this out in A5 size so I can fit two plans to an A4 sheet of paper.

On the Lunch Box plan this week:

Grains;

Monday, Wednesday, Friday – Nutri Grain (dry in a small container)

Tuesday, Thursday – Meusli Bar

Plus the grains found in wraps and bread rolls 

Proteins;

Monday, Wednesday – Ham (with Salad in a wrap)

Tuesday – Chicken (Chicken Parma bread roll) I buy those little bread rolls from woolworths, they are a little bigger than a dinner roll.  I keep them in the freezer and heat for about 6 minutes before making them.

Thursday – Boiled Egg (as a snack)

Friday – Pork (Home made hot dog with sausage leftover)

Calcium

Monday,  Wednesday – Squeezie yoghurt

Tuesday – Diced Cheese

Thursday and Friday – Tzatziki Dip (With Carrot, Celery and Bread sticks)

Fruit and Vegies

Monday, Wednesday, Friday – Strawberries and Diced Apples

Thursday – Vegie Sticks (as above with dip!)

Tuesday – Cherry tomatoes (with the diced cheese on toothpicks)

The Ham and Salad Wraps also have Lettuce/Carrot /Tomato/Cucumber on them!

Left Overs For Lunch

Where possible I tie this plan in with our Weekly Meal Plan.  For example, Monday night we are having Chicken Parmiagina so the left overs will go on a bread roll the next day.  Wednesday night the menu consists of Lamb Souvlaki, the left over tzatziki is a great as a veggie dipper in the next days lunch box! Thursday night we are having a bbq so a left over sausage becomes Friday’s Hotdog. 

Hidden Heros

Adding a simple salad on to the ham wrap means my reluctant regular salad eater devours carrot and cucumber! By getting creative with the cherry tomatoes and cheese cubes on a toothpick skewer, he is getting antioxidants, calcium and protein!

Organising For Winter


The temperature here has dropped. By dropped, I mean dived head fist into the single digits.  In the space of  one week we have gone from having the fan on to digging out the blankets.  As the seasons change so does our home.  Different spaces need adapting, organising and replenishing.

When Organising for Winter I start with…..

THE BEDROOMS

Target - Dotty Flannelette Sheet Set

Blankety Beds.  I have two sets of bedding for the kids bedrooms.  Winter and Summer.  For Winter I replace their cotton fitted and top sheets with cozy flanellete.  As I went to do this I realised this would be the first Winter Miss A was not in a cot!  So I purchased these great basic flanellete sheet sets for her bed.  For now I am leaving their coverlets on the bed and adding a thicker blanket on top.  By July I know I will have to get out the thicker quilt covers.

Target - 2 Pk of Holeproof Socks.

Building On the Basics.  This is a great time to restock the kids wardrobes with the basics.  It has been a year since we have needed so many singlets and socks and in that time My Pigeon Pair have GROWN! For Master O I stock up on plain white singlets. These are great for under school uniforms. Little Miss A I can get a little fancier and get a range of white, pink, purple.  I also restock their sock collection.  I find multipacks offer the next value for money and I like to buy at least 5 pairs of socks each.  Socks are a one wear item, take longer to dry and get extra filthy, hence needing 5 pairs! This time of year I also buy the kids a pair of new slippers each.  To help extend the wrdrobe budget I also grab a few plain long sleeved shirts for layering.  They can be worn under a summer pinafore dress, with a summer skirt or under a t-shirt, to give the summer wardrobes a little stretch into winter. With all of these new items coming into bedrooms it also important to cull the old!

15 L Storage Container - Target

Storage. Starting with the socks and singlets I sort, cull and store.  Any socks that are too small, I donate.  Any that are small but I think I could pass on to friends later, I store. I try to do this before buying anything new.  It’s amazing to find that you have items that you had bought, not used and forgotten about! Unfortunately having a “pigeon pair” means that there is rarely anything to pass down, within our family! I also use this time to put cull, sort and store the past seasons clothes.  Little Miss A actually had a whole contianer of clothes that I am sure will still fit this next summer!  I simply took them out of her wardrobe and put them into a storage container. I labelled it with it’s sizes and season e.g Summer Size 3-4.  

Vacuum bags are great for long term storage. Like the clothes that are too small to wear but to good to throw.  But for clothes that we may need occasionally during the current season I like to use a plastic storage container. My trick is to buy a storage container smaller than I think I will need!  It forces me to be more brutal with my culling and is easier to fit and lift on top of the wardrobes.  I like the 15L ones from Target as they are sturdy, clear (not smokey) and have great lids.  They are also only $7!!!

The bedrooms are now “Winterfied”with freshly made winter beds, to cosy up into on a cool night.  Now if anyone knows how to keep “My Pigeon Pair” in their own cosy beds and out of mine let me know!

10 Ways With Washi Tape

 

 I must admit I am late to the Washi Tape Party.  I watched on as blogger after blogger fell in love with the stuff and found a million different ways to use it.  But I sat by and put it in the too complicated basket.  Would it come off if I didn’t like it?  What would I use it for?  I am not only often creatively challenged but I am also impulsive and impatient and seriously easily addicted to things.  I am afraid my friends Washi Tape is no different.

So let’s start with the obvious…..

What is Washi Tape?

 Washi Tape is a little like masking tape.  It is easily applied and removed and can also be ripped instead of cut.  But inlike masking Tape it is BEAUTIFUL!  It comes in an amazing array of colours and patterns.

What can I use Washi Tape for?

How long is a piece of tape?  You can use it for a million different things but I will start with 10!!!

 

Organising Cups at a Party! Can’t remember whose cup belongs to who? How about some washi tape to help identify the owner! Or use some colour coordinating tape to help decorate some simple plastic cups for the next children’s Birthday party!

 

Reuse any can or jar by decorating it with washi tape. Great for pencils, utensils even cutlery. Cheap and beautiful.

 

Washi tape is so easy to remove it is great for decorating walls. This is such a clever way to frame artwork in a childrens bedroom or play space.

 

A basic photo frame can be colour co-ordinated and personalised to suit any decor with some Washi Tape!

 

OK so this would be time consuming, but oh how creative AND effective! A Washi Tape Keyboard!

Washi Tape adds interest and colour to these simple glass jars. Group them together, add candles or flowers and you have a gorgeous table centrepiece.

 

A simple wood or cardboard letter, covered in washi tape and attached to a frame makes a great piece of monogram artwork. This would make a great present!

 

You know how much I love colour coding my calendar and planner! Next year I am going to use wash tape instead of pens! Assign a different colour for each family member or for each different activity.

 

How cute is this! I am thinking cake top decoration, children’s bedrooms or seasonal table decorations!

Organising, Labelling and Finally Finishing.

Life just gets busier and busier. Somewhere along the line of my “Year Off” from work, I took on a new job! It was an opportunity that I could not pass up and I am starting to get into the swing of the new work from home routine. Best of all this job offers me a chance to be creative, inspire teachers and provide resources that enrich childrens learning environments. However my own work environment is anything but inspiring at the moment!

I have begun to feel overwhelmed by the number of unfinished “projects” around the house! I have a habit of starting 5 million projects a week and finishing very few of them in a year! I have been following my good bloggy friend “Cassadiva’s” “Finishing up Friday” series. I need to take a leaf out of her book so this week I am not starting ANY NEW PROJECTS! I have to finish some others first!

So on the list……

1. Finish all assembly of items for our “Command Centre” Area. This includes;

Hanging the IKEA FINTORP Rail system and organising the contents of it.

Putting up the Filing system for all of the homework resources.

Filling the Expedit shelves with new storage buckets

Ordering labels for the buckets

Assembling the music stand

Creating an Emergency container

2. Label the laundry organising containers.
 
 
In fact every room in this house requires some label love but I am taking it week by week and this week it is the laundry! Remember last year I organised the laundryusing these baskets? Well I never got around to labelling the baskets or containers in the laundry cupboard.  This week I couldn’t find the cats collar and realised the contents of the baskets were so disorganised!

4. Finish off the Easter Decorating!
 
 
I think that is enough for one week!
 
We have two big organising projects on the horizon that I am itching to get into, but I have other things that need finishing first
THE MASSIVE PROJECT, that is becoming increasingly frustrating is the Home Office.

Take note, my office looks nothing like this and it never will, but a girl can dream!
I now spend a lot of time in our office space and it is driving me crazy.  It is primarily the “little” things that are taking over the space.  We seem to have cords, folders, pens, papers, staplers and envelopes EVERYWHERE.  In fact at last count I had 3 sets of little shelves, a filing cabinet, a small table, a huge desk  and four chairs in there!!!!!  
 
It is a difficult space to work with (it is a strange shape with lots of windows), money is tight, there is so much to do, the excuses are endless.  But I at least need to make a start…..soon…next month or even just this year sometime!

Organising a Family Calendar

At the hub of our family’s Organisation Station is the FAMILY CALENDAR.

 

There she is…STEP 3 of the process.  If you look closely you will notice this photo was taken with the calendar showing September 2011 !!!  2013 will be our third year of using a family calendar from Stuck On You

 This year we I chose the “Spring Nest” design, you know how much I love those little birds!  I love that it is personalised, a great large size, with large “daily” boxes to fill in all our stuff and that there is a section for notes down the bottom.  Oh and of course I love that it is gorgeously designed and in colour!!!  After all I will be looking at this calendar every day.

Having the calendar is one thing, but you have to USE it EFFECTIVELY for it to help in your household organisation.  Here are my tips for keeping the calendar running smoothly.

 1. Colour Coordinate.  Ok so maybe I am a little OCD when it comes to colour coding but this is something that has always worked for me.  Each member of the family has their own colour. Any events or activities that are for the whole fmaily also have their own colour.  This allows me to see at a glance who has what happening each day.  I use these smae colours in my Diary aswell.

2. Location, Location, Location.  I keep our calendar at our Organisation Station.  It is near the phone, computer and where all of our bills and mails are kept.  This means as soon as any dates are confirmed they can be scheduled STRAIGHT onto the calendar.  If I dont do it straight awy or write it on a piece of paper for transferring later, it doesn’t happen!

3. One and Only.  We have only ONE CALENDAR in our whole house.  There is not one for him, one for me, one for school, JUST ONE FAMILY CALENDAR.  If anybody wants to know what is going on, they know where to look.  This means there is no double booking, or something being written in a work diary that no one knows about.  If it’s not on the Calendar than it’s not on. That brings us to the next point.

4. EVERYTHING GOES ON THE CALENDAR.  If it’s not on the Calendar its not on.  This means medical appointments, returning library books, party rsvp dates, school notes, EVERYTHING.  

5.  Take the time.  I take the time once a week to update my diary with what is on the calendar.  This gets everything clear in my head for the upcoming week.

That is it.  5 simple tips to keeping your life sorted.  Ok so maybe that is not your whole life sorted, but having a family calendar is certainly a great start to having an organised life!

and so the planning begins…..

I am a planner.  A procastinator, but a planner. I make lists upon lists.  I find it very hard to live in the now.  But I am starting to embrace it.  So now, even though you can feel Christmas in the air, I am starting the New Year organising.

On My List.

1. Sort out the school stuff. Otherwise known as ,  tackle the mountain of Master O’s school paraphenalia.  Sort, Throw, Store a years worth of school “stuff” efficiently.  Whatever system I choose, it is going to have to be compact and efficient.  We have two children, with 14 years of school each.  That is a lot of stuff!

2.  Collate the back to school lists.  The uniforms, stationary and text book requirements are here but I am yet to make my “table“.  This is playing on my mind as January is CRAZY for us with two trips away.

 

Stuck On You

3. Organise a 2013 Family Calendar.  I have done this!  It is here, it is beautiful and it is empty!  There is something so appealing about an unfilled calendar that I have been putting off writing in it!  We had an amazing system in 2012 using this stuck on you calendar and we want it continue.

4.Organise a 2013 Diary.  Once again I have done this!  I am trying a new system of keeping my schedule organised this year.  It does help that I dont have a work schedule to manage! I have enlisted the help of a “Persoanl Planner” and I can’t wait to share with you how I use it! Check out personal-planner.com.au for more

5. Start a new cleaning schedule.  This is the up or maybe down side of now being a stay at home Mum.  The cleaning and organising of a rather large house is now my domain.  I need help people! I need a schedule or even just a list, I need to sort out a cleaning container?  

I could go on forever.  I have to say there is something exciting about fresh starts, new plans and endless lists!

Day 1 of “The Organised Housewife’s 20 Day Challenge” and we are Cleaning and Organising The Kitchen. Let me start by saying that our Kitchen was in an average state.  It is the hub of our home.  Literally.  You can see it from the living and dining room, there is no escaping it.  So we try to keep it fairly clean and tidy….

Here it is mid breakfast prep. We have a “Galley” style Kitchen.  It is fairly small with ok storage space but Oh how we wish we had made it bigger! Hey doesn’t everyone. Notice the hole above the Fridge? Lets just say it pays to measure the height of your new fridge.  Oh and the plant.  Hubby’s addition to the decor!

What we like about our kitchen.

  • It is central in the house so I can see everyone whilst “working” in there.
  • Good Size pantry
  • Granite Bench tops
  •  Coffee Cupboard! ( A small cupboard at the end of the bench fro the toaster, kettle, coffee and tea etc)
  • Ok number of powerpoints
  •  Wall oven
What we would change.
  • More bench space!
  • Closer to the entertaing/outside area of the house
  • More of a u shape or non walk through!  Baby gates are a nightmare in this kitchen!!!
  • More storage space!!!
  • Bigger oven and stove top! Ours just came with the house and we wish we had of looked into this further.  Our oven is tiny!!!
But onto the task…..
There were three areas I wanted to declutter  and clean!
Area 1 – I really want to get rid of the cook books.  They are rarely used and don’t need to be on display taking up bench space! The bread!!!  I hate it being on display!  The biscuit style jar holds salt.  Apparently essential for any “woggy” kitchen!
 
AFTER- I moved the utensil jar onto the other side of the cooktop.
The recipe books got moved into “The Great Wall of Ikea” Wall Unit
This bread tin was an awesome buy form Kmart!  It was a while ago and they were a set of two tins (a bsicuit tin came with it) for about $15.
BEFORE – Talk about out of sight, out of mind!  This is our under sink cupboard!  We loose a lot of space due to the (“In Sink-er-ator??) Speaking of which…these are a must!!! I buy everything in bulk when on special, hence the multiple packets of wipes and dishwashing tablets!
AFTER – Yes I had all of these containers around the house!  Just call me a basket hoarder! The large tin now holds the dishwashing tablets!  It is a Jamie Oliver tin I bought from Target.  It was sitting under the stairs as I felt it used to clutter our bench top!
The baskets are all from Kmart.  I have tried to keep like items together.  Furniture cleaning, Scrubbing etc.
Behind the tin is “The Stockpile” of cleaning products.  Unopened products.  On the top shelf are our everyday items.  As you can see I love wipes!!!  
BEFORE – This last area is the end of the bench.  The plant was a present from a student many years ago!  But it needs a new home!  This basket literally appeared on the bench last week.  Thats what happens when your husband has a day off work!  I like to keep a little basket/container here for our daily water bottles.  I am hopeless at drinking water so if I cant see it there calling me, I forget to drink!!!
 

AFTER – Good bye plant and basket!  I have had this little basket for ever!  Now the kids drinks and my awesome CONTIGO drink are tidy but visible.
